FAQ
Hello, welcome to Drowsic! We’re a private group focused mainly on translating Japanese novels, with a soft spot for rom-coms, but we also welcome original stories from our independent creators (authors).
About Drowsic & content
Q: Do you only feature rom-coms?
A: While Japanese rom-com translations are definitely a major focus and a favorite for many of us, we aren’t strictly limited to them. Authors contribute what captures their interest, so you might occasionally find other genres or original stories popping up too.
Q: How are novels/stories chosen for translation or publication (besides pickup requests)?
A: Mostly, authors pick projects they personally find interesting and want to read, write, or share. Sometimes choices are influenced by popularity, recommendations from friends, or discovering something new they enjoy.
Q: Why isn’t there a regular update schedule for content?
A: Drowsic operates pretty casually, we don’t enforce strict schedules or rules. Many authors have other projects, primary groups, or real-life commitments. We publish the stories we enjoy when we have the time and motivation. Drowsic is primarily a hobby project, and that flexible approach shapes our update cadence.
Q: How can I get notified about updates for a specific novel/story?
A: Check the site regularly or use the site’s RSS feed if available. If a community Discord server exists, they may have update bots. Some authors also announce updates on their social media or support pages.
Q: Are there ads on the site?
A: No, the site is currently ad-free. We aim to provide a clean reading experience. Authors and translators are supported through subscriptions and premium content instead.
Translation process & project status
Q: Are the translations edited? What’s the quality control process?
A: Processes vary by author. Some authors work with dedicated editors, some self-edit, and others collaborate with beta readers. While we strive for high quality, approaches differ by project. If you notice significant errors, please politely point them out in the chapter comments.
Q: What happens if an author drops a project or goes inactive?
A: It happens. Real life takes priority. Sometimes another author picks the project up; other times it remains inactive. We don’t have a formal takeover policy since it depends on interest. When a project is officially dropped, we try to update its status page.
Q: How can I suggest a novel for you guys to translate (pickup request)?
A: You can suggest novels for translation by leaving a suggestion in the comments section of a specific translator or project you think might be interested. They may pass it to the team. After suggesting, please wait about a month; if no one picks it up, there likely wasn’t enough interest at that time. (This applies specifically to translation requests.)
Authors & joining
Q: How do I become an author or translator for Drowsic?
A: We accept public applications, you can apply at any time via our Contact page. Applications are reviewed periodically (typically weekly or monthly) depending on operator availability, so please allow up to one month for a response. Acceptance is subject to review based on fit, experience, and availability; if selected, you’ll receive an invitation and onboarding details. If you have a referral from a current member, please mention it in your application.
Subscriptions, Kyun & monetization
Q: Why are the subscription options and prices different depending on the author?
A: Each author decides independently how to handle monetization. Because we don’t enforce rigid group-wide rules, authors choose whether to offer subscriptions, what tiers to provide, and how to set pricing.
Q: How do the different subscription/support options work (Patreon, Ko-fi, etc.)?
A: Each author manages their own monetization, so specifics (platform used, tier benefits, payment methods) are listed on their individual support pages. Refer to the info provided by the author you want to support.
Q: I see mentions of Kyun. What is that?
A: Kyun is our virtual currency that helps unify subscription payments across different authors. It makes supporting multiple authors simpler and helps manage access to advanced chapters or other subscription benefits. You can typically purchase Kyun through your account dashboard or the Kyun purchase page on the site and then use it for various subscription tiers.
Q: How much does the site take from authors and translators?
A: Drowsic applies a flat 15% platform fee to each subscription and premium-content sale processed through the site. This 15% is deducted automatically from the gross sale at the time of purchase; the remainder is what goes toward the author’s earnings.
What the fee covers:
- The 15% fee is used solely to cover PayPal payment processing fees and any direct payment-handling costs charged through PayPal (for example, fees related to refunds/chargebacks or currency conversion when applicable).
- We use a single flat percentage to keep transaction handling and reporting predictable for authors.
Scope and external platforms:
- The 15% fee applies only to payments processed on Drowsic (for example, Kyun purchases, site subscriptions, and paywalled chapter sales).
- If an author uses off-site platforms such as Patreon or Ko‑fi, those transactions are processed off-site and are not subject to Drowsic’s 15% fee. Note that external platforms have their own fees and terms.
Q: Why do some authors use Patreon/Ko‑fi instead of the site’s Kyun system for subscriptions?
A: Authors choose the method that works best for them. Common reasons:
- They had an established Patreon/Ko‑fi page before Kyun was introduced.
- They prefer the features, community tools, or payout options that those platforms offer.
- They find it easier to manage support on familiar platforms. We encourage readers to use whichever support system the author provides.
Contact, typos & payment issues
Q: Who should I contact if I find a typo or have an issue with a chapter/payment?
A: For typos or content issues, leaving a comment on the chapter page is usually best. For payment or subscription issues tied to a specific author (including Kyun purchases or their Patreon/Ko‑fi), contact that author directly through their chosen support platform, as Drowsic does not centrally manage individual author payouts. For general site issues, technical problems, or questions not related to specific content or payments, please use our Contact page.
Community & re-posting
Q: Is there an official Drowsic Discord server?
A: No, we don’t run an official server. Individual authors or fans are welcome to create community servers. If you start one for Drowsic readers, let us know and we might add your invite link to the site. We won’t manage those servers, and we can’t guarantee all authors will join.
Q: Can I re-post your translations/stories on my own site, Wattpad, etc.?
A: Generally, no. Please respect the work put into the content here and link back to our site instead of re-posting. Some authors may state specific permissions on their project pages, but the default is not to re-host.
Rules & policies
Q: Where can I find the site’s rules and policies?
A: Our main rules are in the Terms of Service. For data handling details, see the Privacy Policy. Information about copyright claims is available on the DMCA Policy page.
